Experiential travel: ten most popular bucket list trips

November 24, 2016

Following a survey of 1,000 people by credit card comparison site totallymoney.com, Globetrender can reveal the ten most popular bucket list trips to book around the world, and how much they cost.

From safaris to road trips, the trend for “try before you die” experiences is on the up, and will continue to drive the tourism industry in 2017.

On average, people are willing to spend between £5,000 and £10,000 on ticking off their bucket list trips, which are considered once in a lifetime opportunities with serious bragging rights.

The BDRC Continental Holiday Trends 2016 survey of more than 1,000 UK residents showed that British travellers take a bucket list holiday once every three years. They are most popular among 18-34 year-olds, who book them every 18 months.

According to Claire Newell, owner and president of Canadian travel agency Travel Best Bets: "The bucket list destinations are very similar for Millennials, families and Boomers. However, it's the type of tours, accommodation and budgets that can differ between the groups.

"Boomers want more luxury and structured tours, while families are looking for good value and to have most of the trip pre-planned, but amenities that ensure both parents and their children have a good time.

"Millennials want good value, a little less structure, smaller groups, some adventure or unique experiences, and they want to be connected at all times."

Newell says some of the destinations topping bucket lists for 2016 included Africa (Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa), Cuba, Iceland, Montenegro and Cambodia.

Adding even more pressure to get a move on with you bucket list plans is the fact that, according to The Telegraph, there are 14 places that may be destroyed or irrevocably damaged within just a few generations.

These include the Great Barrier Reef, Antarctica, the snows of Kilimanjaro, the mines of Potosi in Bolivia, Florida’s Everglades, the North Pole, the coral atolls of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean, and the Columbia Glacier in Alaska.
