Canton Blue at The Peninsula is launching weekly mahjong nights, as the traditional Chinese tile game gains a new generation of players.

Canton Blue at The Peninsula London is launching a Mahjong Club this September as part of a month-long programme marking the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Beginning on September 14, Mahjong Mondays will take place in the restaurant's Tea Lounge every Monday from 12pm to 9pm. Guests will be able to reserve a table to play the traditional tile game over noodles and cocktails.

The mahjong sets have been supplied by Cathay Pacific and created with Hong Kong woodwork atelier Start From Zero. Made from recycled wood, they feature jade green tiles and details inspired by aviation.

Each £30 booking includes exclusive use of a mahjong table, a bowl of hand-pulled noodles and an Apricot gin and Yellow Baijiu martini. Walk-ins will also be accepted when tables are available. Private mahjong tutors can be booked at least a week in advance, priced from £100 per person for a group of four.

The launch comes as hotels and hospitality businesses explore mahjong as a social experience for both experienced players and newcomers. Played with decorated tiles and typically involving four people, the strategy game has a long history in China and is played widely across Asia and around the world.

At Canton Blue, the Mahjong Club forms part of a wider celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is traditionally associated with family gatherings, the moon and the sharing of mooncakes.

From September 1-30, the restaurant will serve a three-course Mid-Autumn Festival lunch for £48 per person. It includes four dim sum followed by a choice of dishes such as Kung Pao chicken, sweet and sour pork, steamed sea bass or braised tofu. Mango sorbet and a warm homemade mooncake complete the meal.

Guests can also learn how to make the pastries themselves during a Mooncake Masterclass led by Canton Blue's master dim sum specialist chef Ling Ling and her team.

Canton Blue is not the only hotel putting mahjong on its autumn calendar. In Puerto Vallarta, adults-only hotel Casa Velas will launch its own "Bubbles and Bams" sessions in October, pairing games with Mexican sparkling wine and cocktails including Hugo Spritzes and French 75s.

Held on the Lobby Terrace every Tuesday and Thursday evening, each game will last around 30 to 40 minutes and is intended for four players, although sessions can begin with two. Beginners will receive instructions and can ask hotel staff for guidance on the rules and strategy. Mahjong sets will also remain available outside the organised sessions.
