Ian Schrager's Public hotel comes to West Hollywood
Ian Schrager will bring his Public brand to LA next spring, introducing his 'luxury for all' concept to the Sunset Strip with a new hotel designed with architect John Pawson. Olivia Palamountain reports
Legendary hotelier Ian Schrager is preparing to return to Los Angeles in spring 2026 with the opening of Public West Hollywood, a 137-room property that will anchor one of the most recognisable stretches of the Sunset Strip.
Schrager is widely regarded as a transformative figure in hospitality, having co-founded Studio 54 and pioneered the boutique hotel movement. Over the past five decades he has shaped concepts such as the “urban resort” and launched brands including Edition and Public, blending high design with social energy. His projects have influenced not only hotel culture but also the wider landscape of contemporary lifestyle design.
The new West Hollywood property is intended to bring this approach to a fresh audience, combining thoughtful service, cultural relevance and accessible luxury within a landmark building reimagined by Schrager in collaboration with British architect John Pawson.
Public West Hollywood will feature spaces shaped for both guests and locals, beginning with a lively lobby acting as the social heart of the hotel. A pool, a trio of dining and entertainment venues and generous indoor–outdoor areas will create an environment where people can gather throughout the day.
The standout feature will be a 16,000-square-foot rooftop terrace filled with planting and offering 360-degree views across Los Angeles, with space for relaxed dining, evening drinks and community-focused programming. Schrager describes Public as a vision of democratic luxury built on four pillars: service, style, entertainment and experience. The aim is to create hotels that feel inviting rather than exclusive, where design is thoughtful but not intimidating.
Public is positioned as more than a place to stay, providing environments for working, socialising, eating and connecting. Each location focuses on multisensory design, contemporary food and drink and cultural programming intended to appeal to both travellers and locals. The West Hollywood property will follow the same path, with an emphasis on atmosphere, ease and modern living.
Reservations for Public West Hollywood will open in early January 2026, ahead of the hotel’s spring debut. The opening marks Schrager’s third project in the city and underlines his ongoing influence on the hospitality landscape of Los Angeles.
