Emirates uses AI to better predict severe turbulence

As global turbulence intensifies due to climate change — with severe clear-air incidents increasing by 55% over the past four decades on major flight routes, according to research by the University of Reading — Emirates is taking a leading role in developing smarter, data-driven solutions to keep its flights under control.

The Dubai-based airline has introduced one of the industry’s most sophisticated turbulence forecasting systems, combining artificial intelligence, real-time crowd-sourced data, and advanced meteorological tools to anticipate rough air before it occurs.

Leveraging a suite of complementary platforms — SkyPath, Lido mPilot from Lufthansa Systems and IATA’s Turbulence Aware programme — Emirates has built a multi-layered global network of information sources that work together to improve flight planning, enhance safety, and elevate passenger comfort. Over the past year, this proactive approach has already led to a measurable reduction in severe turbulence encounters across its network.

Captain Hassan Alhammadi, divisional senior vice president of flight operations at Emirates, says the airline’s mission is clear: to minimise turbulence wherever possible through innovation and collaboration. “We recognise that turbulence remains an ongoing challenge that cannot be completely eliminated,” he said. “But we’re committed to doing everything possible to reduce unexpected severe encounters through the use of advanced technologies and AI. While still early in implementation, we’re already seeing validation of the benefits these systems can deliver.”

At the core of Emirates’ strategy is SkyPath, an AI and machine learning-based weather prediction platform that integrates real-time turbulence reports from thousands of aircraft. Using multiple data sources — including Eddy Dissipation Rate measurements, ADS-B transponder data, and SkyPath’s patented iPad accelerometer technology — the system translates device movement into precise turbulence readings. This allows pilots to anticipate and avoid disturbances, even in regions with limited data or in areas of “clear air” turbulence that typically evade radar detection.

Alongside SkyPath, Emirates continues its long-term partnership with Lufthansa Systems’ Lido mPilot, a navigational and weather application tailored to the airline’s operational needs. Lido mPilot provides live updates on cloud activity, convection and icing, delivering pilots a constantly updated picture of atmospheric conditions. Its integration with national weather services, such as Germany’s DWD, further enhances accuracy and global coverage.

Emirates has also deepened its participation in IATA’s Turbulence Aware Programme — a shared global platform that aggregates real-time turbulence data from airlines around the world. By contributing and consuming live data from its own flights across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia, Emirates not only improves its own forecasting but also helps strengthen industry-wide resilience.

All three systems feed into the airline’s electronic flight bag, where pilots can visualise live turbulence maps and make informed adjustments to routing and altitude. The outcome is greater safety, improved comfort, and more efficient fuel use.

“Our multi-layered approach enables us to contribute valuable data and insights to the broader aviation industry,” says Captain Alhammadi. “While no one can promise turbulence-free flights, we are making measurable progress in reducing severe incidents and giving passengers a smoother experience.”

By investing in AI-driven forecasting and global data collaboration, Emirates is redefining how airlines manage turbulence — turning what was once unpredictable into something increasingly preventable.
