The team behind Indian restaurant chain Dishoom has launched its first overnight accommodation, opening the two-bedroom Permit Room Lodgings above the newly launched Permit Room Portobello.

Set on the second floor of the three-level venue, the unique lodgings extend Dishoom's signature Bombay nostalgia into hospitality, featuring two en-suite bedrooms and a separate living room inspired by historic Indian lodging houses.

"Selfishly, we're so excited to finally have a Permit Room in London," says Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, co-founders of Dishoom and Permit Room. "When we began thinking about our Portobello Permit Room, we kept coming back to wanting to keep things rooted in Bombay, and the warmth that envelops you the moment you arrive there."Permit Room Lodgings Permit Room LodgingsThe concept draws from India's early lodging houses, which offered refuge for migrants and travellers from the 1860s onwards, run predominantly by Parsi proprietors. The Portobello Road building itself has hospitality heritage, having housed the Colville Hotel until the mid-20th century before becoming an Irish/West Indian public house.Permit Room LodgingsResearch trips to Bombay influenced every design detail, with inspiration drawn from institutions including Kekee Manzil - the storied home that served as a hub for Bombay's modern art movement - and historic properties like New Vasantashram Lodging House and Bentley's Hotel.Permit Room LodgingsMore than 30 original furniture pieces sourced in Bombay create what the founders describe as "staying at a fancy friend's place."
