Cruise line designs four-year voyages for Americans to skip life under Trump
Cruise company Villa Vie Residences has offered Americans the chance to escape Donald Trump's entire second term with a four-year voyage around the world. Olivia Palamountain reports
Villa Vie Residences has launched its "Tour La Vie" programme featuring a variety of extended stays aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey, including a tellingly named four-year "Skip Forward" option that would allow passengers to return to US shores after the next presidential inauguration.
The cruise company's marketing appears deliberately timed to capitalise on post-election sentiment, with packages including a one-year "Escape from Reality" cruise, a two-year "Mid-Term Selection" option, and a three-year "Everywhere but Home" itinerary.
"We came up with this marketing campaign before we even knew who would win. Regardless of who would have won, you would have half of the population upset," CEO Mikael Petterson tells Newsweek. "Quite frankly, we don't have a political view one way or the other. We just wanted to give people who feel threatened to have a way to get out."
According to The Independent, the company has already experienced a "huge uptick" in enquiries since announcing the cruise on 7 November, the day after the US presidential election.
The floating escape doesn't come cheap. While prices start at just under US$40,000 per year, single-occupancy cabins for the full four-year journey begin at US$256,000, with double-occupancy accommodations costing up to US$320,000 for the trip.
The price includes all meals and drinks, wifi and medical visits. Housekeeping is provided weekly and laundry service bi-weekly at no additional cost, though alcoholic beverages are only included with dinner.
For politically engaged Americans concerned about missing their civic duties while at sea, the company has solutions in place. Passengers will still be able to participate in the 2026 midterm elections and the 2028 presidential election through mail-in ballots sent to the cruise line's corporate office and then forwarded to the ship.
The Villa Vie Odyssey, which can accommodate up to 600 residents, recently began its ambitious 15-year global journey. Passengers will visit over 425 ports across more than 140 countries, including all seven continents, 13 World Wonders and more than 100 tropical islands.
The itinerary includes a month in the Caribbean before a four-month South American adventure featuring two Panama Canal transits, the Chilean Fjords, an Antarctic sail-by, Carnival in Rio and an eight-day expedition into the Amazon River.
"Villa Vie offers a unique one-of-a-kind way see the whole world at a slow pace where you have enough time to actually experience the cultural vibe of every port," says Anne Alms, head of sales for Villa Vie Residences. "Your villa is your bedroom, and the ship is your home, she'll take you across the globe to endless horizons."
The ship had a rocky start to its journey, having been stranded in Belfast for four months due to unexpected repairs earlier this year. Originally scheduled to depart the Northern Irish city in May 2024, it eventually set sail in late September.
According to The Daily Mail, a host of US celebrities are looking to start new lives in the UK to avoid Trump's second term. Courtney Love has revealed she's becoming a British citizen, because of "frightening" Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The singer, 60, has joined a huge list of stars fleeing the US in a desperate bid to escape life under Trump.
Celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, designer Tom Ford, Ryan Gosling and his wife Eva Mendes are among those who have fled America for the UK.
