Located on Herengracht canal, the Hoxton hotel opened in the Dutch capital in July, and is the first from the brand outside London.

Five 17th-century canal houses, one of which used to be home to the city mayor, were knocked through to create the five-floor, 111-room hotel.

Hoxton_AMS_1_2388The bedrooms come in five categories (Shoebox Twin, Cosy, Cosy Canal View, Roomy and Roomy Canal View), and range in size from 17 sqm to 28 sqm. One-night stays are between €89 and €399.

Hoxton_AMS_4_3086Each has different design features and moods, but all come with brand-standard perks such as free wifi, one hour of free international calls, breakfast bags filled with a banana, granola and a bottle of orange juice, and a fridge with bottled water and fresh milk. There is also a grocery shop in the lobby selling produce at supermarket prices.

Hoxton_AMS_5_4044Bathrooms feature rainshowers and Pen & Ink bathing amenities, which were created by the Hoxton in partnership with illustrator Hedof and local product designer/perfumer Liza Witte.

Hoxton_AMS_1_2306Local interior design duo Nicemakers conceived of the “mid-century eclectic” look to the hotel, a more refined evolution of “rough luxe” and “industrial chic” with a mix of modern, vintage, ethnic and Scandi fixtures, furnishings and objets d’art.

Hoxton_AMS_2_2396The overall effect is homely, with shelves displaying curated collections of books, vases and crystal glassware.

Hoxton_AMS_4_3807Reception has an anachronistic display of old room keys behind the front desk, while “neo-vintage” pieces such as Roberts radios and Victorian-style porcelain sinks are contrasted with Mac computers and cutting-edge light installations.

Hoxton_AMS_5_3340Lotti’s restaurant is run in partnership with Soho House & Co and serves Italian-Dutch fare throughout the day. It has a retractable roof to let fresh air and sun in, and plush blue velvet banquettes.

Hoxton_AMS_3_2840The lobby has a spiral staircase leading to Up Top, a mezzanine bar for coffee and cocktails.

The Apartment event space is made up of five rooms accommodating up to 130 people in total. There’s central pantry for snacks and refreshments open in the day – at night it becomes a private dining venue.

Hoxton_AMS_4_2878_v2Similar to Soho House’s private members’ clubs around the world, the Hoxton hosts a calendar of regular screenings, exhibitions and talks from Dutch startups and thought leaders (hoxtown.com).

Hoxton_AMS_4_2951Examples of upcoming events include an Instagram photography workshop and a literary evening on the topic of intimacy.

Those looking to keep fit can attend free yoga classes and morning workout sessions, as well as hire bikes or use nearby gym TrainMore.

There are two other Hoxton hotels, both in East London – one in Shoreditch and a newer one in Holborn. Hoxton_AMS_2_2499
