Mama Shelter will open its first mountain resort in Val Thorens in 2027, bringing its playful, community-driven hospitality to the highest ski resort in Europe. Olivia Palamountain reports

In a world where alpine ski resorts often cling to traditional chalet aesthetics and formal mountain hospitality, Mama Shelter is set to shake up the scene with a bold new vision: Mama Shelter Val Thorens.

The first mountain hotel from Ennismore's Mama Shelter brand, the hotel is slated to launch in the French ski resort in 2027, bringing Mama’s signature spirit of creativity and conviviality to the slopes.

The 148-room property will feature a restaurant with a vast 800m² panoramic terrace, a lively bar, karaoke rooms, a spa, and a dedicated “Teen Room” designed to make every generation feel at home. In true Mama Shelter style, the focus will be on shared experiences: a blend of relaxation, music, laughter and après-ski spirit brought together under one exuberant roof.Mama Shelter Val Thorens The new resort will mark a milestone for Mama Shelter, a brand known for bringing urban vibrancy and bold design to unexpected destinations. Whether singing in the karaoke lounge, soaking in the indoor pool with mountain views or gathering around the bar after a day on the slopes, the Mama Shelter Val Thorens experience is designed to feel like a joyful home away from home.

Cédric Gobilliard, brand COO for Mama Shelter at Ennismore, says: “With the opening of our first resort in Val Thorens, Mama Shelter will be shaking up conventions and revolutionising mountain hospitality. We’re bringing our free, festive and creative spirit where no one expected it – to the heart of the Alps. It’s a milestone in our journey and a whole new way to experience the mountains.”Mama Shelter Val ThorensThe project also reinforces Mama Shelter’s commitment to sustainability and responsible construction. Working with BREEAM consultants, the development aims for a “Very Good” certification, ensuring that the majority of construction waste will be reused or recycled. This approach aligns with the growing expectation that even luxury mountain resorts should contribute positively to their natural surroundings.

Jean-François Delettre, managing director of Galata Group, describes the project as “a new generation of mountain hospitality,” combining winter sports, celebration and wellbeing. “Our ambition is simple,” he said. “To make the mountains come alive in new ways, for today’s travellers and those of tomorrow.”

Promising to honour the city's artistic heritage, the décor of Mama Shelter Nice is inspired by the work of legendary painters. Rose Dykins reports

In June 2024, Mama Shelter will launch a hotel in Nice – the brand's 11th location in France, and 18th worldwide.

Located on the Côte d'Azur, in Nice's up-and-coming Riquier district, adjacent to the Old Port and close to the city's historic centre, the property will have 102 rooms.

There will also be a rooftop with a pool, a bar and pizza counter and a restaurant, as well as two workshops, two studios and a breakroom.Mama Shelter NiceMama Shelter Nice will occupy three buildings, including one from the early 20th century with a preserved façade.

Cédric Gobilliard, general manager of Mama Shelter, says: “Nice and its neighbourhoods are ever-evolving, and are attracting young people and families more than ever. Our latest addition in France, the 11th Mama, will settle in this welcoming city where conviviality and creativity reign. Mama Shelter Nice"Within its walls, Mama Shelter Nice will tell both the ancient and contemporary story of the city – an inspiring story rich in flavours, maritime essence and artistry."

Embracing Nice's artistic heritage, Benjamin El Doghaïli, architect and head of the Mama Shelter design studio, has drawn inspiration for the hotel's design from the works of painters who settled in the city.

Mama Shelter Nice's look pays homage to the palettes, motifs, subjects, and collages of Matisse, Braque's birds, and Picasso's ceramics from the Vallauris period.Mama Shelter NiceOn the white walls of the lobby, hand-painted frescoes inspired by these artists will be illuminated by large mirrors alongside giant hangings by artist Kate Mary. The hotel's carpets are being designed by artist Laureline Galliot, and celebrate pointillism, the technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image.

Meanwhile, Mama Shelter’s iconic cartoon masks will hang on bedside table lamps, as they do across all of its hotels.Mama Shelter NiceMama Shelter NiceThroughout the property, vibrant hues of saffron yellow, red ochre, ultramarine blue and Nice olive green will be paired with with the smeared palettes of impressionist painters.

In collaboration with artists and artisans such as Lola Mercier and Beniloys, bouquets of Mediterranean fruits, vegetables and flowers – including lavender, sunflower and wheat poppy – will adorn the top of columns, evolving with the seasons, in the style of a Van Gogh still life. At the centre of the restaurant at Mama Shelter Nice, an olive wood is set upon terracotta tiles, while suspended luminous sculptures inspired by festive street lights lighten up the room.

Between the hotel's buildings, there will be a verdant patio and flowered alleyway covered by a retractable glass roof. Meanwhile, the rooftop of Mama Shelter Nice will be home to a showstopping mosaic swimming pool with wicker screens, lounge chairs and a bar.Mama Shelter NiceThe large ground-floor restaurant will feature an open kitchen, slanted mirrors, cast iron columns adorned with frescoes where communal tables fill the space and create a convivial, friendly, laid-back atmosphere.

For lunch and dinner, guests can enjoy a Mediterranean-inspired Mama Menu – from sharing platters to salads – or opt for the daily special. There will be a breakfast buffet, and brunch options on Sundays.Mama Shelter NiceAt the rooftop restaurant, meats, fish, and vegetables will be prepared on a Big Green Egg barbecue, or  grilled in a Josper charcoal oven, while pizzas from the pizza oven are served by the slice.

The functional yet playful “ateliers” at Mama Shelter Nice will provide a space for seminars, product launches, meetings and events. The team at Mama Shelter Nice are on hand to co-ordinate activities, offer event support and organise customised aperitifs, lunches, and cocktails.Mama Shelter NiceAs well as welcoming renowned artists, Nice is a student city, with its universities and prestigious schools transforming its abandoned warehouses into art galleries, restaurants and bars overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

The city's  annual carnival is the most important winter event on the Côte d'Azur - a two-week celebration bringing the city of Nice to life with themed parades, art troupes and musical groups. In June 2025, ahead of the United Nations Ocean Summit, the carnival’s theme will surround the Sea and Oceans at the Port of Nice.

Serge Trigano, who founded the Mama Shelter hotel collection, says: "It was only natural that one day Mama would land in Nice. With enthusiasm and passion. Mama Shelter Nice is both a refuge for happy vacationers and passing nomads delighted to savour the sweetness and art of living in this beautiful city. But it is also for the people of Nice. Welcoming the residents of cities where Mama settles is one of its reasons for being."

From free porn to bespoke mustard, the Mama Shelter Dijon puts novelty and French culture at the centre of its approach to hotel design and guest experience. Nick Hendry reports

Opened in July 2023, and located in the capital city of the historical Burgundy region in eastern France, the Mama Shelter Dijon hotel has a 28-seat cinema for private screenings, two karaoke rooms, a wine library and a traditional pétanque pitch.

Dijon is located around 90 minutes by train from Paris, and is surrounded by countryside famous for producing fine wine, Kir blackcurrant cordial, and the mustard named after the city. In celebration of the latter, Mama Shelter Dijon has collaborated with local artisans Edmond Fallot to create a version of the condiment exclusively for sale at the hotel.Mama Shelter DijonMama Shelter Dijon has 120 rooms, branded from "Medium" (16 sqm-20 sqm) to "XXL" (35 sqm-62 sqm). Quirky features include organic solid shampoo bars, TVs loaded with free movies (including porn) and Tweetie Pie bedside lamps. Dogs and cats are also welcome but at an additional charge of €25.Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter DijonThere is also a patio bar and 202-seat restaurant serving local classic dishes such as Burgundian snail shells with parsley; pig terrine; cheese boards; "knife sausage with strong juice"; beef tartar with 3 Edmond Fallot mustards; and Coquillettes "MAMA's style," Mostoles ham, and organic soft-boiled egg.Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter DijonResponsibility for the aesthetic of the hotel fell to Benjamin El Doghaïli, lead architect of the Mama Shelter design studio. A listed, brutalist-style building from the 1960s, once home to insurance offices, has been transformed to match the brand ethos of Mama Shelter.

“My aim was to capture the Burgundian landscape and invite it into the walls of Mama,” says El Doghaïli. The carpets throughout the property have been designed to pay tribute to the vineyards of Burgundy, while the patterns and colours on the caning on the headboards reflect the glazed ceilings found around Dijon.

“This Mama is a spoiled child, playful, adorned with warm colours, terra cotta, powder pink, and green. Each of its rooms and suites is distinguished, for the first time at Mama, by separate toilets, Tom Dixon basins, large showers and, in some cases, baths.

"Further details that affirm its personality include: a charming bench, a desk with a chessboard-shaped top that can be removed to play... even in bed. But above all, they are flooded with natural light, generous, magical, which ennobles every corner, gives relief and depth, even to the concrete.”Mama Shelter Dijon Mama Shelter DijonDijon is the latest city to be home to a Mama Shelter hotel, with Dubai and Nice due to follow in 2024.

Serge Trigano, co-founder of Mama Shelter, says: "For almost 15 years, Mama Shelter has worked to anticipate its enthusiasts' desires for discovery, encounters and happiness. Even more so after a pandemic that has turned the world upside down, shaken up our way of life, thinking and working, Mama has been ahead of society's evolution, understanding the desire to see elsewhere, by setting up in towns, in regions, renowned for their gentle way of life, their traditions, their better ways of living together."

Opening in 2023, Mama Shelter Rennes will embrace the character and culture of a lesser-known French city with its new 'living intelligently' concept. Rose Dykins reports

Boutique hotel brand Mama Shelter has announced the French city of Rennes as its next launch location.

Located in Northern France, Rennes is known for its beautiful medieval architecture, as well as being the city with the second-largest student population in France, which adds to its bustling atmosphere.

Mama Shelter Rennes is located in the heart of the city, moments from Place des Lices and the famous rue de la Soif. It is also a five-minute walk from the Sainte Anne metro station and 20 minutes from the nearest TGV rail station - which connects to Paris Montparnasse station in one hour and 30 minutes.

Being situated in the centre of a busy square, the hotel's location is conducive to people watching, and exploring the independent food shops, restaurant cocktail bar and lounges. Complying with the Architectes des Bâtiments de France [conservation law], the vision is for the property to welcome locals as well as visitors from overseas, and to complement and support existing local businesses.

Mama Shelter RennesSerge Trigano, co-founder and president of the hotel group, says: "At Mama Shelter in Rennes, our teams have successfully met two challenges: to establish a contemporary hotel in a renovated historic complex, many parts of which come under the Bâtiments de France jurisdiction. We also wanted to soak up traditions in this region of Brittany, with its strong personality and highly sophisticated culture.

"We are now looking forward to sharing Mama's festive spirit with the people of Rennes and all those who love Brittany. To invite them to experience and feel the city, in its restaurants and bars, which subtly tell its story. We're also looking forward to welcoming fans of Mama's in the heart and soul of Rennes.”

Mama Shelter RennesThe design concept for the Rennes outpost of Mama Shelter – by Benjamin El Doghaïli, architect and head of the Mama Shelter – embraces the city's rich heritage, and intends for the hotel to be at one with its environment.

Its 119 bedrooms vary in size and shape. Some are nestled under roofing, and many have period features such as mouldings and fireplaces. All of them have Mama Shelter's luxury bedding, and striking bathrooms with black and white striped tiles, and organic beauty products from the Mama Skin range. A one-night stay at Mama Shelter Rennes will start from €99 for a medium room.

Mama Shelter RennesEl Doghaïli has drawn on the building's history as a former banking property where currency was minted as well as Renne's local culture.

The lobby features a large round counter adorned in a mosaic frieze of buckwheat pancakes – a delicacy of the area – in the Odorico brothers' style, in honour of their cultural legacy in Rennes, which is home to a large concentration of their art deco mosaics.

Mama Shelter RennesThe brasserie restaurant offers views over the city, and has upholstered benches with a custom-made fabric that evoke the popular saying: “Vouloir le beurre et l'argent du beurre” (To have one’s cake and eat it, too).

One of the hotel's  ground floor lounges is decorated entirely in pink and embellished with lobsters, mussels, seaweed and oysters, a nod to the region's famous seafood platters. Jumbo-sized Chinese umbrellas are reminiscent of cocktail decorations, and a reminder that the Breton people are travellers at heart.

The hotel's rooftop provides an incredible view of the city's 19th-century buildings, ramshackle 16th-century houses, and towers. Down in the the basement, several colourful karaoke rooms will be available to hire for groups.

Mama Shelter RennesThe hotel's swimming pool has disabled access, and there's also a hammam, a sauna and a Mama Skin Spa – the first of its kind for Mama Shelter – nestled under stone vaults. Absolution, a French organic cosmetics house, has partnered with Ho Karan, a Breton cosmetics brand renowned for its hemp-based treatments to offer a range of spa treatments.

Rennes is attracting an increasing number of visitors, as well as families who want to escape city life. The streets of its historic centre are loved for their half-timbered houses, while the Saturday morning covered market at Place de Lices is the place for experiencing the produce from the region's market gardeners. fishmongers, cheese makers and florists.

In the bars of rue Saint-Michel, also known as rue de la Soif, visitors can sample Renne's local beer, cider and cola (Breizh Cola). For music fans, the city has a thriving rock and alternative music scene, while its legendary Transmusicales festival sees locals sing sea shanties and folkloric songs.Mama Shelter RennesCédric Gobilliard, managing director for Mama Shelter, says: "Living intelligently, means knowing how to live together, in social harmony. This is the motto of the city of Rennes, which also reflects Mama Shelter’s ethos.

"Mama Shelter is a unique place of economic and social vitality, breaking down codes and sharing its values of equality and freedom. Opening the first Mama in Brittany, in the centre of Rennes and in a listed building, is a testimony to the boldness of Mama Shelter's disruptive concept and its sincere desire to unveil its brand and festive spirit to the people of Rennes and to travellers who are lovers of authenticity".

With seven new Mama Shelter hotels opening around the world in 2022 and 2023, Globetrender checks into Mama Shelter Toulouse to get a sense of what the brand is all about. Lotte Jeffs reports

Mama Shelter has the secret sauce needed to create spaces that appeal to Millennials and Gen Zers alike. Ever since the first property in the portfolio opened in 2008 in Paris the playful approach to hospitality – photobooths, foosball, free movies to stream – has meant that the brand continually surprises guests with its innovative offerings.

Globetrender recently checked into the brand’s Toulouse outpost and found a space buzzing with the local student community and well-heeled 30 somethings. Stays are also really affordable. Rooms cost from £79 a night for a 15 sqm Small Mama Double (£89 for a Medium).

The building is behind the façade of an old movie theatre and in homage to its past there’s a 45-seat cinema on site that plays cult classics to hotel and restaurant guests Wednesday-Sunday. The rooftop bar and restaurant with its parasols and colourful loungers brings a splash of tropical cool to this under-the-radar French city. Mama Shelter ToulouseWe were impressed with the hotel’s three workspace ateliers, that can be hired by the day. Atelier 1 has floor to ceiling arched windows offering a view of the boulevard below and with hipster prerequisites of table football and a basketball net, they’d be perfect for team away days or impromptu creative brainstorming sessions.

Our room was small (despite being in the "medium" category) but functional and the experience of staying in it was elevated by the lighting (choose an evocative red for night time ambience) and the quirky touches, such as a bunny and a Darth Vader mask hanging on the night light). Mama Shelter ToulouseMama Shelter ToulouseThe king-size bed was also exceptionally comfortable. Apparently, free X-rated movies are available on the TV – and cheeky in-room amenities are on-hand. Mama Shelter ToulouseNo one stays in a Mama Shelter to sleep – this place is all about the scene. A DJ plays most nights and the ground floor courtyard area is the perfect place for a party. (I could hear the music from my room.)

Dining is also central to Mama Shelter hotels. At the Toulouse property, the rooftop bar serves pizza, while the main restaurant lists mains such as salmon tartare and risotto, as well as regional dishes such as duck breast and Toulouse sausage with mashed potato.

Mama Shelter ToulouseAnother detail we enjoyed was the merchandise on sale in reception – proving the commercial power of a hospitality brand that has successfully diversified and commoditised its unique "mood". Its bold graphics adorn T-shirts, hats and tote bags alongside candles, glass wear and other arty trinkets.

Future openings from Mama Shelter

MAMA DUBAIThis year will see the opening of Mama Lisboa (Lisbon) situated between the lively Príncipe Real district and the monumental Praça Marquês de Pombal; Mama Paris La Défense located between the Esplanade de la Défense and Pont de Neuilly, in the heart of the famous business district; and Mama Shelter Dubai (pictured).

The Dubai property will feature 197 rooms – and 192 apartments – plus a range of dining outlets, a terrace with four swimming pools, an outdoor CineMama.

Looking further ahead, 2023 kicks off with the opening of Mama Bucharest, Mama Rennes and Mama Dijon (France), and finally Mama Sao Paulo will open before 2023 comes to a close.

Mama Roma opened in July 2021 with the brand's first-ever Roman-style Mama Baths, plus a pool, sauna and hammam.

Owned by the Accor Hotel group and created by Serge Trigano, a French entrepreneur known for chairing Club Med in its 90s hey day, Mama Shelter has cornered the market in upscale affordability. The brand offers an inspiring example of centering authenticity and experience in designing a new kind of luxury.

For anyone feeling uninspired or overwhelmed when it comes to deciding where to go for a weekend away, French company Accorhotels has partnered with tech start-up Travelsify to create a new way of searching for hotels – according to your mood. Jenny Southan reports

It's no wonder travellers are finding it difficult to choose where to stay. Accorhotels alone operates in 95 countries and has a portfolio of more than 4,000 hotels across 21 different brands, including Raffles, Sofitel Legend, SO Sofitel, Onefinestay, Swissôtel, 25 Hours, Mama Shelter, Jo & Joe, and Grand Mercure.

Whether you desire a romantic retreat or a hedonistic getaway, the new Accorhotels MoodMatch service will come up with suggestions of where to stay.

How does it work? Accorhotels has employed intelligence packaged by Travelsify from its "Hotel DNA content platform", which claims to have analysed every hotel in the world according to "a unique and weighted sequence of attributes that reflect the guest experience".

The way it has done this is by using artificial intelligence to scan over 100 million natural language online hotel reviews and extracting 34 key qualities that are important to people when booking. (For example: cosy, spacious, stylish, bright, gourmet, views, vintage, classic, nightlife, luxury and design.) These can then be matched with the way you feel.Accorhotels MoodMatchSo instead of thinking about the destination that best suits your preferences, and then spending hours searching for the right kind of hotel, you can be immediately guided by AI insights that prescribe the perfect stay for your state of mind.

Romain Roulleau, senior vice-president of e-commerce and digital services for Accorhotels, says: “Nowadays, travellers aspire to unique travel experiences; with this new, user-friendly and fun way of finding their next destination by initially being led by their emotions and where the mood takes them, we are providing a ground-breaking way of searching, which goes far beyond finding a hotel solely based on destination."

Accorhotels explains that "if users like what they see, all they have to do to continue their journey is click on the photo of the hotel they have been matched with to access the hotel details and enter their dates to find out about prices and availability".

Let's give it a go… Today, Globetrender wants peace and quiet. Where does MoodMatch suggest it stays? Before it comes up with an answer, it asks what kind of interior design I like. I choose "zen". Then it asks about the type of location. I opt for "waterfront". Anything else? Outdoor pool please. The hotel which I have a 100 per cent match with is the Hotel Windsor in Nice. It's set in a tropical garden and has a bohemian vibe to it that I immediately like. I'm impressed.

Hotel Windsor, Nice

Not just for Accorhotels, this metadata can be harnessed by any online booking platform, hotel group, artificial intelligence or voice-based travel bot, or targeted advertising platform to better tailor the search and booking experience. This means MoodMatch searches will become much more prevalent – not just for hotels, but restaurants, package holidays and excursions.

Bruno Chauvat, CEO at Travelsify, says: “With the launch of MoodMatch, Accorhotels once again proves its capacity to innovate and adapt to the new ways of searching for hotels. We are glad that it chose to implement Travelsify’s unique technology to personalise its offer according to travellers’ preferences."

Rose Dykins reports on the opening of hipster boutique hotel Mama Shelter in Rio de Janeiro's creative quarter. It is the sixth property from the trendy French brand, which has partnered with renowned designer Philippe Starck on earlier projects.

Mama Shelter Rio de Janeiro opened its doors last week in the hilltop neighbourhood of Santa Teresa – a haven for artists and musicians, known for its boutiques, bars, tattoo parlours, and sights such as the world-famous Selaron Steps.

Operated in collaboration with Accorhotels, and this time designed by French architect Jalil Amor, Mama Shelter Rio de Janeiro has 55 rooms, starting from 15 sqm, in two “houses”. Prices start from about £75 a night, making it relatively affordable for tourists.Mama Shelter Rio De JaneiroInteriors feature crisp white king-size beds, free high-speed wifi and 27-inch iMacs (offering complimentary movies, video booth and photo booth functions), and a Virtual Concierge service. Quirky touches include Rio-themed paraphernalia, graffiti and Looney Tunes masks.

mama-rio-j2_002Mama Shelter Rio De JaneiroThe hotel also aims to encourage artistic partnerships, with “a trio of rooms set aside for collaboration along with lush green outdoor communal spaces”.

Mama Shelter Rio De JaneiroIt will also offer a programme of events such as bingo, live music, family entertainment and screenings of football games in its bar – with mini amphitheatre seating.

Set to open in the near future, the hotel’s airy, contemporary restaurant will be headed up by Brazilian chef, Fernando Pavan.

Mama Shelter Rio De Janeiro

The Mama Shelter concept was created eight years ago, in 2008, by the Trigano family who also co-founded Club Med. Mama Shelter debuted in Paris, before opening up in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Los Angeles. Lille and Toulouse are also tipped to be unveiled.

Mama Shelter Rio De Janeiro

Mama Shelter’s founders set out to bring the brand to cities they loved, in neighbourhoods with a unique story, and each hotel aims to create a homely environment where guests can convene and co-create. Mama Shelter Rio De JaneiroThe trend for targeting artists in their many forms can also be seen in London, with the opening of nonprofit hotel Green Rooms earlier this year.

With cheap but chic double rooms starting from £45, it’s affordable, meaning it’s ideal for people needing a place to stay in the city when exhibiting, rehearsing, meeting agents or performing. It will also provide a buzzing base for them to work and collaborate.

The art-led concept has been set up in partnership with leading cultural bodies and institutions such as Somerset House, the Royal Court Theatre, the British Council and Create London, and funding comes in part from the Mayor’s Office and Haringey Council, which owns the premises.

Founded in 1999, the Ace Hotels chain has also done a great job of attracting the creative classes and media types across its properties in New York, LA, Palm Springs, London, New Orleans and various other destinations. "We are not here to reinvent the hotel, but to readdress its conventions to keep them fresh, energised, human," it says.

A press release said: "Mama’s rooftop allows you to take in the sights of all of Los Angeles with a near 360-degree view from the Hollywood sign to Downtown to South Bay to the Westside.

"She’s located blocks away from the peaked roof and cement celeb handprints at the Chinese Theatre along the Walk of Fame, as well as countless boutiques and bars, tattoo parlors and record shops, burrito stands and vegan restaurants."

Mama-L.A-005The Mama Shelter brand was founded seven years ago by Benjamin Trigano (whose family launched Club Med), and as with all the other properties, interior design and art is by Thierry Gaugain, former head of design for Philippe Starck.

The LA incarnation is the first from Mama Shelter to arrive in the US, with other hotels dotted around Europe. The first to open was in Paris, but there are also outposts in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Istanbul.

Each one is unique, with a sense of fun and rebelliousness that makes them feel somewhere between a lively hostel and a chic hotel.

It was announced last year that French hotel giant Accor bought a 35 per cent stake in the brand to help further its presence around the globe. Other destinations that could welcome a Mama are Lille, Zurich, Mexico City, Seoul, Amsterdam, Barcelona, London and New York.
