Dutch superyacht builder Heesen Yachts has sold its 50-metre hybrid superyacht Project Orion, marking a significant advancement in sustainable yacht technology.
The vessel, built on speculation to demonstrate the shipyard's commitment to environmental innovation, features hybrid-electric propulsion that uses only 45 litres of fuel per hour at speeds up to 10 knots - that's a 30% reduction compared to traditional diesel-powered motor yachts of similar size.
Project Orion's hybrid system enables near-silent cruising, with noise levels of approximately 46 decibels in hybrid mode - equivalent to softly falling rain, says the company. The yacht is constructed in aluminium to minimise weight, further enhancing its efficiency credentials. "Orion is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing superyacht technology while seamlessly blending sustainability with luxury," says Ruud van der Stroom, Heesen Yacht's chief commercial officer. "With our innovative hybrid solutions, we are setting new standards in energy efficiency and delivering an unparalleled, serene cruising experience."
The yacht features a design by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, including a near-vertical bow and floor-to-ceiling windows. With a shallow draft of just 2.15 metres, thanks to an optimised hull design by Van Oossanen, Project Orion can navigate shallow waters including the Bahamas and Mediterranean coastlines.
Italian interior designer Cristiano Gatto has created a contemporary, light-filled interior featuring an owner's stateroom on the main deck, a full-beam VIP suite and four guest staterooms. Gatto deliberately selected sustainable materials for use throughout the vessel.
Project Orion represents the third vessel in Heesen's advanced 50-metre Fast Displacement Hull Form aluminium series equipped with hybrid propulsion. The shipyard now designs all its yachts with the option for hybrid propulsion if requested by owners.
