Blue Origin's first all-female crew completes milestone space journey
Six pioneering women - including pop star Katy Perry and media personality Lauren Sánchez - reached the edge of space today aboard Jeff Bezos' New Shepard rocket, signalling the first all-female space mission in more 60 years. Olivia Palamountain reports
As previously reported by Globetrender, the crew consisted of entrepreneur Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, CBS broadcaster Gayle King, singer Katy Perry, pilot Kerianne Flynn and media personality Lauren Sánchez.
Sánchez, who is engaged to Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, lead the mission with the aim of challenging the crew's perspectives of Earth while empowering them to share their stories and create lasting inspiration for future generations. The flight lasted approximately 11 minutes, reaching the Kármán Line - the internationally recognised boundary of space - before safely returning to Earth.
Developed in close collaboration with scientists, engineers and producers, the immersive virtual reality experience uses actual data and imagery to authentically mimic the voyage to space, and back home again in a breathtaking VR journey beyond the Kármán Line.
By leveraging cutting-edge VR technology, including high-resolution graphics and advanced hand and motion tracking, the capsule ensures a deeply immersive experience "that's also visually beautiful", says the team behind the launch.Less than an hour from Orlando, Florida, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex allows visitors can get a hands-on feel for the story of humans in space, showcasing flight flown artefacts, inter-stellar VR and simulator experiences, meetings with veteran NASA astronauts and more.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex opens daily at 9am, with closing times varying by season. Single-day admission is US$75 per adult, US$65 per child. A two-day ticket is available for US$89 per adult and US$79 per child.
