REVIEW: Cape Grace hotel, Cape Town

March 13, 2025

After acquisition by Fairmont, Cape Town's Cape Grace hotel has preserved its South African soul while elevating the guest experience with eco-friendly Le Labo products, a chauffeur service and a daily wine tasting, writes India Dowley

LOCATION

Perched on its own private quay at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Grace occupies arguably the most coveted position in Cape Town – suspended between a yacht marina and the working harbour, with Table Mountain rising majestically in the backdrop. This prime spot combines centrality with seclusion, positioned just far enough from the tourist crowds to maintain calm. The city's key attractions are within walking distance: V&A shops and restaurants, the Robben Island ferry, and Zeitz MOCAA.Cape Grace hotel

For exploring beyond, the hotel's complimentary chauffeur service covers destinations within 10km, including the Table Mountain cableway and the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay.

ETHOS

Since opening in 1996, Cape Grace has established itself as a cornerstone of Cape Town's luxury scene. Now part of the Fairmont family after a significant 2024 renovation by 1508 London, the hotel has pulled off a delicate balancing act – evolving with the times while retaining its distinctive South African character. Unlike some international hotel acquisitions that strip away local identity, Cape Grace remains genuinely connected to its location.Cape Grace hotel

GUEST PERSONAS

The clientele spans a discerning spectrum: couples drawn to the romantic water-and-mountain panoramas; families appreciating the children's activities; and business travellers valuing the professional yet relaxed atmosphere. We're told that high-profile guests appreciate the discreet service.Cape Grace hotel

INTERIOR DESIGN

Despite its Fairmont affiliation, Cape Grace feels more independent than corporate. The 2024 renovation has lightened once darker colonial-inspired spaces, introducing a contemporary aesthetic while preserving residential warmth.

The lobby makes a statement with moulded high ceilings, distinctive chandeliers and an eclectic furniture collection that feels thoughtfully assembled. Throughout the property, South African art, ceramics, and textiles nod to Cape landscapes and cultural heritage. The palette has shifted toward softer neutrals punctuated with mid-century accents, while traditional drapery has given way to clean lines. Rattan elements and black lacquered cabinetry with marble accents display books that invite actual reading. French windows frame spectacular views in nearly every space, creating living postcards of the mountain and marina.Cape Grace hotel

ROOMS

The 113 individually designed accommodations range from spacious Harbour View Rooms with Juliet balconies, to the Cape Grace Suite – a penthouse complete with private terrace, 180° panorama, and an outdoor Jacuzzi offering perhaps the most impressive bathing view in Cape Town.

All rooms blend understated luxury with comfortable livability: king or twin beds with fine linens, marble bathrooms with separate tubs and showers, and Le Labo Rose 31 products in eco-friendly dispensers. Personal touches enhance the experience: fresh flowers, curated books and intuitive technology.Cape Grace hotel

MINIBAR AND IN-ROOM DINING

The in-room bar presents an elegant, mature touch with premium spirits and excellent South African wines. A whimsical surprise in our suite came in the form of a roll-out mini putting green, adding playful charm without feeling contrived.Cape Grace hotel

RESTAURANTS: WHAT TO EAT

Heirloom Restaurant elevates South African ingredients without over-complication. The tasting menu is available in four or seven courses focused on quality local produce such as KwaZulu-Natal winter truffles and Karoo lamb.

The Library Lounge offers all-day dining surrounded by books and antiques, while their exquisite afternoon tea overlooks the yacht marina with Table Mountain as a backdrop, and features creations from the hotel's renowned pastry team.

In-room dining is available 24 hours. We opted for breakfast in our suite one morning and were treated to a splendid affair. Seated at our table with crisp white linens, silver cloches were lifted to reveal perfectly poached eggs, smoked salmon, house-made yoghurt and freshly pressed juices. Cape Grace hotel

BARS: WHAT TO DRINK

Bascule Bar, positioned on the marina with a water-edge deck, houses over 500 whisky expressions from Scottish single malts to Japanese rarities and emerging South African labels. The bar excels in craft cocktails incorporating indigenous ingredients such as the Fynbos Bee's Knees with native honey, accompanied by live jazz some evenings.

For quieter moments, the Library Lounge Bar offers drinks in an intimate setting, while the seasonal Pool Bar provides alfresco options with views of Signal Hill.

WELLNESS FACILITIES

The Fairmont Spa exudes a retreat-like atmosphere with three elegant treatment rooms, including a couple's suite. Guests can immerse themselves in a calming salt room, unwind in the steam room and sauna, and refresh in the invigorating experience shower. The personalised treatment menu draws inspiration from Cape botanicals and coastal treasures, combining the soothing whispers of the sea with the enchanting aroma of fynbos.

Fitness options include a 24/7 gym, guided activities like Lion's Head hikes, and bike rental. The outdoor heated pool, designed with yacht-inspired detailing and cobalt blue-striped loungers, offers scenic relaxation with mountain views. A large flat-screen TV by the pool allows guests to enjoy sports matches without missing the sunshine.  Cape Grace hotel

STANDOUT INNOVATIONS

Cape Grace distinguishes itself through well-executed signature offerings rather than technological novelties. The daily Cape Wine Experience introduces guests to regional vintages, while the chauffeur service removes the stress of navigating an unfamiliar city.

Families benefit from thoughtful children's amenities, including in-room teepee tents, African storytelling and crafting sessions, while golf enthusiasts can play at De Zalze in the Cape winelands.

The property's eco-conscious approach represents perhaps its most forward-thinking aspect.

ECO CREDENTIALS

Cape Grace holds both the prestigious Green Key certification and EDGE Buildings Certification, making it a standout for sustainable operations among South African hotels.

Their zero single-use plastic initiative features glass bottles, refillable Le Labo toiletries, and bamboo key cards. A creative partnership with Vélosophy and Nespresso offers bicycles made from 95% recycled aluminium. The kitchens use AI to minimise food waste while prioritising local sourcing, while comprehensive recycling and water conservation measures address Cape Town's environmental challenges.

The leadership team is more than 56% women, highlighting the hotel's commitment to diversity and inclusion.Cape Grace hotel

INSIDER TIP

Take a RE:CYCLE bicycle pedal along Sea Point promenade, ending at the OZCF Market to experience local life away from tourist hotspots.

SERVICE

What distinguishes Cape Grace is staff longevity – many have remained for years, some since opening. This creates seamless, confident service that feels personal rather than procedural. Management remains visible throughout the property, regularly engaging with guests at breakfast and in common areas.

During an unexpected loadshedding (Cape Town's scheduled power outages), we found ourselves returning from dinner with full stomachs and several glasses of wine when the main lifts stopped working. A thoughtful staff member conspiratorially led us through a back corridor to the service lift. "Not quite so glamorous," she whispered with a smile, "but it keeps running during power cuts." A practical solution exactly when we needed it.Cape Grace hotel

Cape Grace achieves what many international hotels attempt but few accomplish – feeling boutique despite its scale, delivering consistent quality without sacrificing personality. Following its renovation, it has reaffirmed its position in Cape Town's competitive luxury market, impressing through excellence in every aspect of the guest experience.

PRICE
