Lagen Island, an exclusive private island resort in El Nido, Palawan, is undergoing an extensive transformation ahead of its reopening in late 2025. Olivia Palamountain reports

Lagen Island, hidden among limestone cliffs and crystalline waters, first opened in 1998 but is currently being reimagined for contemporary tastes with a focus on responsible luxury and Filipino heritage.

In an unusual move for a high-end renovation, the resort is actually reducing its room count from 50 to 42 to create more beachfront space and showcase the dramatic natural landscape. The swimming pool has been relocated to give prominence to the beach vistas.

At the heart of the renovation is The Nest, a new two-level spa complex featuring a "reflection pond", a gym, yoga studio, relaxation lounge, watsu pool, hot and cold plunge pools, a steam room and a sauna. Three treatment rooms – each of which will have two beds, a bath tub, and a private bathroom – complete the space.   "Every aspect of the redesign has been guided by a deep commitment to preservation," says the resort, which maintains its own sustainability team to oversee environmental initiatives.

The resort's commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in its new Marine & Biodiversity Discovery Centre, where guests can learn about local ecosystems and conservation efforts. A new dive centre, inspired by traditional Filipino nipa huts (a type of stilt house that are indigenous to the Philippines), will serve as a social hub and meeting point.

When it reopens, Lagen Island will offer guests a chance to experience fine hospitality and local flavour while contributing to the conservation of one of the world's last frontiers. Rates will start from £1,000 per night, including transfers from Lio Airport and a scenic boat journey to the island.
