Complete with co-working space and an outdoor pool, Locke will expand into Portugal with the opening of an aparthotel in Lisbon. Rose Dykins reports
Aparthotel brand Locke is launching its biggest project to date with Locke de Santa Joana opening in Lisbon in summer 2024.
Located in the centre of the Portuguese capital, close to the Avenida da Liberdade boulevard, Locke's new property will comprise 370 apartments, hotel rooms, penthouses, and suites set across nine floors.
These will be accompanied by social spaces including ten food and beverage outlets by White Rabbit Projects and Spiritland, a coworking space, event and meeting spaces, a museum, and an outdoor pool with a sun terrace. In step with Locke’s design ethos, which is rooted in locality, acclaimed design studios Lázaro Rosa-Violán and Post Company have teamed up to lead the development of Locke de Santa Joana. The remnants of a 17th-century convent will be transformed into a contemporary, purpose-built hotel, sensitively integrating old and new features to reimagine the historical site.
The design concept of public areas, overseen by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, takes inspiration from the building's layered history and aims to retell it to a modern audience, with each space retaining its distinct character. The property's rooms, designed by Post Company, will celebrate art and culture, with playful interiors that combine historic architectural elements with contemporary comforts in natural tones and tactility.
The use of traditional Portuguese materials – local fabrics, ceramics, and stone finishes – will contrast with contemporary lighting, bespoke furniture and fully equipped kitchens. Each design feature will give subtle nod to the building’s heritage while retaining a strong connection to the modernity and evolving nature of Lisbon.Locke de Santa Joana’s food and beverage offering will be designed to attract travellers and Lisbon locals alike. Its bars and restaurants will serve fresh local produce and showcase music and culture.
Meanwhile, the property's coworking spaces will be designed to offer a balance of work and play. A standout feature of the hotel will be its verdant external courtyard pool and lounge spaces, which allow guests to unwind and enjoy the warm climate of the city.Opening rates for Locke de Santa Joana start from €200 per night for a Locke Room with a balcony.
Aparthotel brand Locke offers signature studio apartments with fully fitted kitchens, living and working space that give guests more space and autonomy than the typical hotel room.
The flexibility of the home-meets-hotel format is aimed at to both leisure and business travellers, for both extended and short stays. Following the opening of its first location in 2016, Locke has expanded to include 15 sites across the UK and mainland Europe.
