Artfarm, the hospitality group behind Scotland’s Fife Arms, is opening Chesa Marchetta, a 13-bedroom hotel and restaurant in the Swiss Alpine village of Sils Maria.

Artfarm, the hospitality group founded by Swiss gallerists Iwan and Manuela Wirth, is expanding into Switzerland with the opening of Chesa Marchetta in Sils Maria this December.

The new property marks Artfarm’s second hotel following the launch of the Fife Arms in Braemar, Scotland, which opened in 2019 and became known for combining hospitality, art and local cultural heritage.

Located in the Engadin region of southeastern Switzerland, Sils Maria has long attracted writers, artists and intellectuals drawn to its Alpine landscapes and distinctive light. Figures including Friedrich Nietzsche, Marcel Proust, Hermann Hesse, Marc Chagall and Alberto Giacometti all spent time in the village over the past century.

Chesa Marchetta occupies a former restaurant previously run by the Godly family from 1947. During its earlier life, the property hosted artists including Gerhard Richter and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Over the past four years, the building has undergone extensive redevelopment to create a 13-bedroom hotel, a 46-cover restaurant and an adjoining three-bedroom house available for private hire.

The project has been led by architect Luis Laplace, principal of Laplace, the design practice known for adaptive reuse projects including Mount St Restaurant and The Audley Public House in London, both part of the wider Artfarm portfolio.

Artfarm says the redevelopment was designed to preserve the character of the historic property while creating a more contemporary hospitality experience rooted in local culture and craftsmanship.

The hotel will be managed by Federica Bertolini, who previously oversaw the opening of the Fife Arms. The restaurant will be led by chef Davide Degiovanni, formerly of London private members’ club 5 Hertford Street and Gordon Ramsay’s Union Street Café.

According to the company, the menu will take inspiration from the seasonal cooking associated with Maria and Christina Godly, who previously operated the property.

The launch reflects continued interest in culturally driven hospitality projects that combine destination storytelling, heritage restoration and design-led experiences. Artfarm has increasingly positioned itself at the intersection of art, hospitality and community-led placemaking through projects across the UK, Europe and the US.

Founded in 2014, the company’s portfolio now includes restaurants, pubs and hotels in locations including London, Somerset, Menorca, Los Angeles and New York. Artfarm also acquired London private members’ club The Groucho Club in 2022.

Opening rates at Chesa Marchetta will start from 400 CHF including breakfast.
