United Airlines launches UK loyalty debit card for frequent flyers
New debit card allows UK customers to earn MileagePlus miles on everyday spending without changing bank accounts. Robbie Hodges reports
United Airlines has partnered with Currensea and Mastercard to launch its first rewards debit card in the UK, marking the first time a US airline has introduced this type of product for British travellers. The United Airlines Debit Card is now available and can be linked directly to an existing UK bank account, allowing users to earn MileagePlus miles through everyday spending.
The card is designed to extend airline loyalty benefits beyond flights. Customers can earn miles on purchases both in the UK and abroad, while also accessing travel-related rewards and competitive foreign exchange rates when spending overseas. Unlike some prepaid travel cards, there is no need to open a new bank account or preload funds.
The launch builds on United’s wider efforts to expand its MileagePlus programme. From April 2, 2026, customers holding eligible United credit or debit cards will also receive accelerated mileage earning when booking flights, discounts of 10% or more on award tickets, and access to Saver Award fares. These benefits will also apply to UK users of the new debit card when flying with the airline.
Bob Daly, managing director, global co-brand cards at United Airlines, says: “The UK is one of United’s most important international markets, and we’re continually looking for new ways to deliver greater value to our customers here. With the launch of our first UK debit card, we’re giving customers a simple, flexible way to earn MileagePlus miles on everyday spending — whether they’re at home or travelling abroad. This partnership with Currensea and Mastercard allows us to extend the benefits of the United MileagePlusSM programme beyond travel and into our customers’ daily lives.”
The card has been developed in partnership with London-based fintech Currensea, which specialises in debit cards that connect to existing bank accounts. The company says the product enables customers to earn rewards such as flights, status upgrades and travel perks through routine spending, while also offering favourable exchange rates when used internationally.

James Lynn, co-founder and CEO of Currensea, says: “We’re thrilled to be working with United Airlines and Mastercard to bring the first US airline rewards debit card to the UK. It means people in the UK can earn free flights, higher membership status and other perks as a reward for their usual day-to-day debit spending, as well as benefiting from the recent enhancements to the MileagePlus programme when booking United flights. With the new United Airlines Debit Card, customers can enjoy world-class benefits and some of the very best foreign exchange rates on overseas spending, all without changing their existing bank accounts.”
Mastercard, which powers the payment network behind the card, positions the partnership as part of a broader shift towards integrated financial and travel services. The collaboration reflects a growing trend where airlines, fintech companies and payment providers combine to offer loyalty incentives tied to everyday financial behaviour.
Darren Deal, senior vice president - fintech, government & digital partnerships, UKI at Mastercard Europe, says: “Partnerships like this show how different brands working together can create a customer offering which is greater than the sum of its parts. It's great to see a leading airline like United commit to enhancing its presence in the UK by partnering with Currensea, one of the most innovative and rapidly growing fintechs in the country. This launch brings British consumers better value, choice and rewards."
