Moonlight Basin is One&Only's US debut, featuring a heated gondola to the slopes of Big Sky Resort, a private observatory and six dining concepts including an eponymous restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Akira Back. Olivia Palamountain reports

One&Only has entered the US market with the opening of One&Only Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana, marking the brand’s first property in the country and its first move into mountain hospitality.

The resort offers direct access to Big Sky Resort via a heated gondola, year-round outdoor programming and a strong emphasis on design, positioning it as one of the most significant luxury hotel openings in North America.

Designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, One&Only Moonlight Basin is set across 240 acres within the Moonlight Basin community and is bordered by more than 17,000 acres of protected land. Located an hour from Bozeman and adjacent to Yellowstone National Park, the resort places guests within easy reach of both one of the US’s largest ski areas and one of its most wildlife-rich national parks.vOne&Only Moonlight BasinOne&Only Moonlight BasinThe low-rise design allows the landscape to dominate, with guest rooms, family rooms and king suites spread across the Main Lodge, East Lodge and West Lodge. The Big Sky Suite includes a wraparound terrace with an outdoor soaking tub. Freestanding cabins offer private outdoor soaking tubs and fire pits, whilst four to six-bedroom private homes feature fire pits, hot tubs, gourmet kitchens and garage access.

More than 15 miles of trails support snowshoeing, fat-tyre biking and Nordic skiing. A ski tuning centre houses the Wintersteiger Jupiter used by World Cup racers.

Summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing and paddleboarding on two private alpine lakes called Lee's Pools. Year-round options include fly fishing on the Madison River, equestrian trail rides and Yellowstone wildlife safaris. A private observatory offers stargazing sessions, whilst KidsOnly provides programming for children.One&Only Moonlight Basin One&Only Moonlight BasinExecutive chef Matt Dahlkemper oversees six dining venues. The Landing serves American and alpine food near the gondola, Wildwood offers ranch-to-table dining in the Main Lodge, and Akira Back brings modern Japanese cuisine from the Michelin-starred chef and former snowboarder.

Dear Josephine is a cocktail bar inspired by Montana bootlegger Josephine Doody. Moonshack is a woodland speakeasy serving whiskeys and cigars. A grab-and-go operates at the Sky Lodge, with Mexican-influenced food available poolside.One&Only Moonlight BasinThe 17,000-square-foot spa features eight treatment rooms, steam and sauna facilities, an oxygen bar and an indoor lap pool with retractable glass walls opening to an outdoor onsen and cold plunge. The second floor houses a fitness centre, whilst a tennis court and yoga deck sit outside.

Big Sky was recently named Expedia's top trending destination for 2026, following 13.7 million visitors to Montana in 2024.
