An innovative wellness concept has launched on London’s waterways, offering exclusive-use spa sessions aboard an eco-conscious canal boat, featuring a hot tub, massages and a wood-fired sauna. Olivia Palamountain reports

A new floating wellness sanctuary has moored on London’s waterways, offering guests the chance to switch off aboard a beautifully designed widebeam canal boat that merges privacy, nature and holistic treatments.

Maria Alexander, a 70-foot custom-built vessel, was created as a high-end spa experience for couples, friends and small groups of up to four, with exclusive access for every booking and only a discreet onboard crew in attendance.

Owned and managed by Corvin and Ingrid – both qualified therapists with more than two decades of experience in financial services and the health and beauty industries – the boat embodies a thoughtful approach to wellbeing, shaped by expertise and personalised service. Its interiors blend Scandinavian clarity with Caribbean warmth, creating an elegant, cocoon-like space that encourages rest throughout the year.
While Maria Alexander remains securely moored during sessions, the soft movement of the canal enhances the therapeutic effect of heat, hydrotherapy and massage. Guests have private use of a wood-fired sauna and a freshly filled hot tub, both designed to support circulation, ease muscle tension and promote deep relaxation.

Treatments range from restorative massage to mineral-rich foot rituals and rejuvenating facials, while the water’s natural sway helps lower cortisol levels and quiet the mind. Across the day, the scenery shifts from peaceful morning reflections to atmospheric evenings, adding a sensory dimension unique to life on the canal. Maria Alexander spa houseboat Sessions last up to four hours and take place inside a climate-controlled interior equipped with a shower, changing area and all essentials including towels, robes, slippers and bathing products.

The boat moves between moorings around Paddington and Little Venice, King’s Cross and Angel, and Limehouse, with exact locations confirmed in advance. Light refreshments such as juice, herbal tea and snacks are provided, while guests are asked to bring swimwear and any personal items they may need.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Maria Alexander is fitted with a “water freedom” system, solar panels and an incinerating toilet, allowing the vessel to operate independently of land-based utilities. While the design maximises comfort, access involves towpaths and steps, meaning it may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. The minimum age for visitors is 16.Maria Alexander
Sessions aboard Maria Alexander cost from £300 per two hours for solo bookings. Bookings are made online with full payment required at the time of reservation, and cancellations or rescheduling permitted up to 72 hours in advance. Bespoke enquiries can be submitted for tailored requests or special occasions.

Offering a rare sense of retreat in the heart of the city, Maria Alexander captures the appeal of slow, water-based wellness – a floating spa experience that feels both private and quietly adventurous.
