Checked Out curates solo travel hotel stays
Checked Out is targeting the growing solo travel market through curated experiences at premium hotels, with an application process that screens guests for 'energy' rather than demographic criteria. Olivia Palamountain reports
Billed as "a new kind of hotel experience for solo guests", hospitality company Checked Out designs stays at high-end properties for people travelling alone who want connection opportunities without forced interaction.
Conceived for "creative professionals, design-minded individuals and curious soloists", unlike conventional hospitality booking, Checked Out operates an invitation-only model where approved applicants receive private booking links rather than open reservation access. The company describes this as filtering for "energy, not age" whilst creating experiences for people who "move well on their own."
Wannabe attendees apply via the website, providing either their Instagram or LinkedIn details. The approval system aims to review and sign off applications within 72 hours. The application process specifically excludes couples and groups, requiring all participants to attend individually. Organisers aim for 50/50 gender splits, with bookings capped once either side fills to maintain demographic balance.
The company's debut event runs from September 12-14 at Gran Marbella Resort & Beach Club, hosting 70 solo guests for €1,350 per person.
The three-day programme includes all meals, drinks and optional activities such as wellness sessions, wine tasting and beach club access, with guests staying in individual rooms. Activities remain entirely voluntary, with the company emphasising that "everything here is optional, and nothing's expected."
The Marbella weekend features private poolside areas exclusively for Checked Out guests, hosted activities including backgammon sessions and breathwork, plus evening events at Amu Beach Club with "flowing rosé, music and a crowd that doesn't rush." Participants can extend stays with 35% discounts on additional nights. The concept addresses solo travel challenges in hospitality designed primarily for couples and families, where individual travellers often face single supplements and limited social opportunities. Checked Out's model creates temporary communities of like-minded solo travellers within luxury settings and differs from existing solo travel companies by focusing on hotels and curated guest selection - rather than budget-friendly group tours or structured activities.
The company explicitly states it offers "no dating apps, no name tags, no lectures on how to live your best life," positioning experiences as networking and social opportunities rather than romantic connections. The website emphasises that it is "absolutely not a dating experience" whilst acknowledging that "if connections happen, they happen naturally."
Future programming details remain unannounced, though the company indicates plans for additional takeover events at luxury properties across different destinations. The concept could expand to other hospitality segments including city hotels, mountain resorts or cultural destinations depending on initial event success.
