Silversea unveils first glimpse of the world’s southernmost hotel

May 28, 2025

The expedition cruise company Silversea has announced the name of its southernmost hotel and released early renders of the property. Robbie Hodges reports

The luxury cruise expedition operator Silversea piqued the curiosity of modern adventure travellers in January 2025 when it announced plans to open the world’s southernmost hotel, in Puerto Williams, Chile. But prospective expeditionists need wait no more.

The brand has just revealed a first glimpse of what to expect along with the hotel’s name: The Cormorant at 55 South.

The hotel’s name, The Cormorant, is an homage to Lakutaia, the Indigenous Yahgan word for the cormorant bird; a longstanding symbol of the seafarer believed to bestow good luck on those venturing out into choppy waters. And 55 South is a reference to the hotel’s unique location at 55° south of the equator.

It will serve as a comfortable and convenient launchpad for those looking to explore Antarctica on one of Silversea’s expeditions, though the property’s epic location in Patagonia will likely have guests craving a longer layover.

Every room will have either forest or waterside views, with both offering expansive perspectives on the natural landscape of Patagonia. Early renders of the rooms show calm, neutral interiors with warm lighting, minimalist furniture, light wooden fixtures and tall, open windows. Items handcrafted by local artisans will decorate the space, too.

Upon arrival, guests will be assigned their own dedicated staff, all of whom will be trained in The Silversea Way – Silversea’s official standard of service. This service will set the tone for the rest of the sea-faring expedition, where guests are treated to lectures, excursions and experiences delivered by experts in the field.

The Cormorant at 55 South

“The Cormorant at 55 South is a tribute to the rich culture, breathtaking natural beauty, and storied history of Puerto Williams, immersing guests in their destination before embarking on their journey to Antarctica,” said Bert Hernandez, president, Silversea.

“Every aspect of The Cormorant is thoughtfully designed with our guests in mind, ensuring a comfortable and uniquely Silversea experience. Each room offers panoramic views of Patagonia, and the hotel creates a deep connection to the local community, providing specially designed experiences that will allow our guests to begin their expeditions sooner than ever, all in uncompromised comfort.”

The Cormorant plans to start welcoming guests during the 2025/26 Antarctica season, with each of its 150 rooms exclusively reserved for Silversea guests.
