Fowlscombe Farm is a regenerative rural escape
Fowlescombe Farm is Devon's newest destination escape, fusing regenerative farming with distinctive rural experiences such as foraging, gathering homegrown flowers and feeding the animals. Olivia Palamountain reports
Fowlescombe Farm, located in the foothills of Dartmoor National Park, this regenerative organic farm now features ten individually designed luxury suites, each celebrating the property's agricultural heritage through a "repurposed, refined aesthetic."
The project, led by Caitlin Owens (whose family also owns the Millbrook Inn) – and her partner, creative director Paul Glade, represents a sophisticated new chapter in rural hospitality.
"Our collaboration with Studio Gugger has reimagined Fowlescombe's stone barns and Victorian farmhouse for a more authentic and grounded kind of luxury travel," says Glade. "We've deliberately preserved the farm's historic character while creating something genuinely unique." Each suite features super-king beds handcrafted using wool from the farm's own flock of rare Manx Loaghtan sheep. Interiors blend design classics with antiques and bespoke pieces, while local materials – including stone from the farm's quarry – connect spaces to their surroundings.
At the heart of the development sits The Refectory, where daily-changing menus reflect the seasons with produce grown and raised just steps away. Signature dishes include Farm Charcuterie, No-Waste Croquettes, Manx Loaghtan Hogget and Salcombe Crab Linguine."Food to us means more than sustenance," explains the farm's culinary team. "It is a story, an affair to be shared, a celebration of our land and its bounty."
The farm-to-fork experience extends beyond formal dining, with personalised options including in-suite meals, field barbecues, and picnics. Guests can join chefs picking vegetables in the gardens, forage through woods or discuss animal breeds over wood-roasted coffee.
Activities are equally bespoke, with hosts crafting personalised itineraries that immerse visitors in farm life and connect them to the wider landscape. Included in the room rate are daily experiences ranging from sunrise yoga in the Greenhouse to bread-making with the chefs and feeding animals with farmers. The property's location offers exceptional access to both Dartmoor's rolling moorlands and South Devon's rugged coastline, just ten miles away. Off-site adventures include sea foraging by kayak, hidden walking trails and gravel biking across the moor.
"We believe that luxury comes from time, connection and a hint of adventure," says the team. "Our aim is to immerse guests in the rhythm of the farm, which is dictated by the land, the seasons and theweather."
Room rates start from £410 per night on a full-board basis, including all meals and on-site activities, with stays entirely bespoke and shaped around individual preferences.
The opening comes as rural tourism continues to evolve beyond traditional farmstays, with luxury agricultural retreats emerging as a sophisticated sector within the UK hospitality landscape.
