Washington DC is set to host WorldPride 2025, marking 50 years of the city's Pride celebrations with a three-week festival headlined by Shakira. Olivia Palamountain reports

Washington DC is gearing up to host WorldPride 2025, transforming the US capital into a three-week celebration of LGBTQ+ culture featuring global superstar Shakira, civil rights marches and one of the largest pride parades ever staged past the Capitol.

The festival, running from May 17 to June 8, 2025 marks Capital Pride's 50th anniversary, this year under the theme "The Fabric of Freedom".

At its heart are two major demonstrations - the WorldPride Parade on June 7, where more than 300 LGBTQ+ organisations will march down Constitution Avenue, followed by an International March on Washington echoing the city's civil rights legacy.Shakira will headline the opening ceremony at Nationals Park on May 31, alongside LGBTQ+ activists, while a Human Rights Conference at JW Marriott Pennsylvania Avenue on June 4 will bring global speakers together to discuss inclusion, accessibility and mental health.

The city's cultural institutions are also embracing the celebration, with the National Gallery of Art staging a Keith Haring and David Hockney exhibition, the Kennedy Centre hosting all-queer productions and a Pride Film Festival at venues including AFI Silver Theatre.In established LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods such as Dupont Circle and Logan Circle, venues are preparing for record crowds.

Local spots such as the Dirty Goose rooftop bar and Officina's drag brunches are expanding their programming for what organisers expect to be one of the biggest Pride celebrations ever staged.

One of the biggest highlights of WorldPride 2025, is the WorldPride Parade.  Bringing together thousands of marchers, dozens of elaborate floats and a sea of rainbow-clad revellers to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride and diversity. With the U.S Capitol as a backdrop, over 300 LGBTQ+ organisations, businesses and advocacy groups will gather and create a joyous atmosphere filled with music, dancing and heartfelt speeches.
