Rosewood is preparing to open a wellness-focused resort in Okinawa, which will bring high-end hospitality to a Japanese 'Blue Zone' region known for longevity. Olivia Palamountain reports

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is set to open its first Japanese property on the remote island of Miyakojima in Okinawa, marking a significant expansion into the Asian luxury market.

Rosewood Miyakojima, opening on March 1, 2025, will offer guests access to one of Japan's least-discovered paradise islands.

The 55-room resort, designed by Dutch architect Studio Piet Boon, sits among sugarcane fields overlooking Oura Bay, with direct beach access and views across the island's celebrated turquoise waters.Rosewood MiyakojimaRosewood Miyakojima The design incorporates local Ryukyu limestone and follows Japanese wabi-sabi principles, reflecting the hotel group's commitment to cultural authenticity.

The property features four distinct dining venues, each showcasing Okinawa's renowned cuisine and ingredients sourced from local partners. Choma will specialise in seasonal Miyakojima produce, while Maas will focus on seafood. The Asaya Spa will feature six treatment rooms, incorporating traditional Okinawan ingredients and local traditions, including a mud mask inspired by the island's Paantu festival.

Activities at the resort will include cultural experiences such as calligraphy sessions with local artists and marine adventures including snorkelling over coral reefs.
