Auberge Collection launches luxury safari portfolio in Tanzania
Auberge Collection has announced its expansion into Africa with the launch of Auberge Safari, a new portfolio of nine luxury camps and lodges across Tanzania.
The move marks the hospitality group’s first presence on the African continent and brings together two established safari operators, Legendary Expeditions and Chem Chem Safari, under a single umbrella brand: Auberge Safari.
Spread across Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, the properties range from camps overlooking the Serengeti migration routes to lodges near Lake Manyara and the Greater Mwiba Protected Wildlife Area. Auberge Collection says the aim is to offer travellers connected itineraries across multiple ecosystems while maintaining the individual identity of each property.
The expansion reflects continued growth in high-end experiential safari travel, with luxury hospitality brands increasingly investing in conservation-led tourism experiences that combine wildlife encounters with wellbeing, local culture and remote accommodation.

Among the new additions is Mwiba Lodge, located on a granite outcrop within a private reserve and featuring ten tented suites overlooking the surrounding landscape. Nearby Mwiba Plains sits close to the Serengeti’s calving grounds, where guests can witness the early stages of the Great Migration.
In northern Serengeti, Nyasi and Songa are positioned close to the Mara River crossing points, giving guests access to one of the migration’s most dramatic moments as wildebeest attempt to cross crocodile-filled waters.
Elsewhere, Chem Chem Lodge and its sister camps focus on what founder Fabia Bausch describes as “Slow Safari” — an approach centred on slower-paced wildlife viewing and longer stays immersed in nature.
Properties within the portfolio range from intimate five-room camps to larger lodges with spas, pools and family accommodation. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, bush dinners and cultural visits with Maasai, Hadzabe, Datoga and Barabaig communities.

Conservation forms a major part of the Auberge Safari model. According to the company, every stay contributes directly to two independently operated conservation organisations: the Friedkin Conservation Fund and the Chem Chem Association. Together, the initiatives help protect wildlife corridors and ecosystems across approximately 242,000 hectares.
Dan Friedkin, chairman of Auberge Collection, says: “Legendary Expeditions has long set the standard for conservation-driven safari experiences, and Auberge Collection brings an equally strong commitment to place and purpose. Together, they represent a meaningful evolution—one that strengthens our ability to protect these landscapes, while offering guests a more connected way to explore them.”
Christian Clerc, president and CEO of Auberge Collection, says: “Safari strips away the inessential and reconnects us to something profoundly simple, rare and truly magical. We are honored to welcome these nine extraordinary camps and lodges into the world of Auberge.”

Fabia Bausch, owner of Chem Chem, says: “Slow Safari was never about doing less. It was about feeling more. And now, that philosophy can travel further—not louder, but deeper—reaching those who are ready to experience the wild not as something to consume, but as something to belong to.”
The announcement comes as safari tourism continues to attract growing interest from affluent travellers seeking remote, nature-focused experiences with strong sustainability credentials. Luxury hotel groups have increasingly expanded into safari operations as demand rises for itineraries combining wildlife, conservation and personalised hospitality.
Auberge Collection currently operates 39 hotels, resorts, residences and private clubs across three continents. The launch of Auberge Safari represents one of the company’s most significant geographic expansions to date.
