British Airways is strengthening its focus on Asia routes as disruption linked to the Middle East conflict reshapes global travel patterns and airline strategy. The carrier has announced a 9% (year-on-year) expansion of its long-haul network for winter 2026, alongside short-term capacity increases to Asian destinations as it responds to shifting demand.
The airline’s latest schedule includes new long-haul routes to Melbourne and Colombo in Sri Lanka, alongside increased frequencies to established destinations such as Cape Town, Tokyo and Barbados. However, the most immediate changes have been seen in Asia, where British Airways has added extra flights to Bangkok and Singapore.
Airspace restrictions and flight suspensions in the Middle East have forced the airline to adjust its network. Services to destinations including Amman, Bahrain, Dubai and Tel Aviv are currently cancelled until at least late spring 2026, while flights to Doha are paused until April.
In response, British Airways has introduced seven additional return services to Bangkok and Singapore in a short period, adding more than 3,300 seats between March 10 and 19, 2026.
Neil Chernoff, chief planning and strategy officer at British Airways, says: “We’re delighted to announce sizeable growth to our flying schedule for winter 2026, including two notable new destinations that I’m confident will prove popular with our customers. We’re also increasing services across several high-demand routes around the world. Together, these changes represent a significant investment in our long-haul leisure network, adding even more options and choice for our customers.
"Elsewhere, we know there is short-term demand as a result of the situation in the Middle East. To support customers with alternative routes from popular destinations we have already launched additional flights, and we will continue to monitor customer demand and add flights to our schedule if we’re able to do so.”
The expansion of Asia routes sits within a broader BA strategy to rebalance capacity towards regions that are less affected by geopolitical disruption while still showing strong demand. Tokyo Haneda will increase to double daily services, while the new Colombo route will operate three times per week from London Gatwick during the winter season. Meanwhile, flights to Melbourne will launch in January 2027 via Kuala Lumpur, operating daily year-round.
Alongside Asia, the airline is also reinforcing its presence in leisure markets. A third daily service to Cape Town will begin in December, while new and expanded Caribbean routes include a daily Barbados service from London Gatwick and increased frequencies to Kingston and Punta Cana. St Lucia will also become a standalone daily service.
Data from British Airways Holidays indicates that travellers are actively seeking alternatives to affected regions. Searches for Caribbean destinations have risen sharply, with Antigua up 63% and Barbados up 46% compared to last year.
Interest in Indian Ocean destinations is also growing, with searches for the Maldives up 32% and Mauritius up 42%.
Overall, flight searches from the UK to the Caribbean, South West Pacific and South Asia have increased by 40%, with short-term travel demand rising by 155%.
This shift in booking behaviour reflects how travellers are adapting quickly to geopolitical uncertainty, choosing destinations perceived as more accessible or stable. For airlines, this creates a need for flexible network planning, where capacity can be redirected at short notice to match demand.
The addition of Melbourne and Colombo also signals a longer-term commitment to expanding in Asia-Pacific markets. Melbourne will be served with four cabin options including economy, premium economy, business class and first, with return fares starting from £1,130. Colombo, positioned as a winter sun destination, will offer three cabins with fares from £620.
