Once a no-go Red Zone, Iraq is re-emerging as a destination for curious travellers. Steppes Travel is responding with its first tour to the country – a cultural journey through the cradle of civilisation led by artist and Middle East expert Sylvie Franquet.

The 12-day itinerary kicks off on September 21, 2026, and journeys through Iraq's storied south, from the marshlands of Mesopotamia to the ancient city of Ur and the souks and riverbanks of Basra.

With a maximum group size of 12, travellers will visit archaeological sites including Babylon, Uruk and the Ziggurat of Ur, whilst encountering Iraq's artistic community through local meetings and guided visits curated by Franquet.Steppes Travel Iraq tourJustin Wateridge, managing director of Steppes Travel, says the tour reflected growing interest among travellers seeking authentic experiences in lesser-visited destinations. "Our mission has always been to go beyond the ordinary, to connect people more deeply with the world and its stories. Iraq sits at the crossroads of civilisation, and through carefully designed travel, we can help guests discover its beauty, rich culture and history."
