Finolhu resort in the Maldives has appointed Mara Restelli as its resident mermaid expert, offering guests the opportunity to transform into mythical sea creatures under professional guidance.

As the Maldives' first and only PADI-certified mermaid instructor, Restelli brings a blend of technical expertise and playful instruction to the resort's expanding underwater offerings.

The new programme builds on Finolhu's earlier mermaid experiences, which Globetrender reported on in 2023 when the resort introduced its resident siren, Lhu Lhu, who would join guests for afternoon dips at the beach club pool. This initial offering was timed to coincide with Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, tapping into the "Set-Jetting" trend of travel inspired by films and television.Finolhu mermaid instructor Now, the resort has expanded this concept into a comprehensive mermaiding programme suitable for guests aged six and above. Visitors can begin with the Discover Mermaid experience - an introduction to basic tail-swimming techniques in Finolhu's swimming pool - before progressing to more advanced courses including Basic Mermaid, PADI Mermaid, and Advanced Mermaid, which introduce dynamic swimming skills, breath control, and even open-water mermaiding when weather conditions permit.Finolhu mermaid instructorFor those looking to take their mermaid skills to a professional level, the resort also offers the PADI Mermaid Instructor Development Course. "The IDC is not just about skills," explains Restelli. "It's about passion - about helping people discover the joy of guiding others into this magical world."

Guests wishing to capture their transformation can book a Mermaid Photo Session, creating underwater souvenirs of their experience. These mermaid programmes complement the resort's existing marine offerings, which include guided explorations of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Hanifaru Bay - known as the world's greatest hotspot for manta rays.Finolhu mermaid instructorSet across four islands with 2km of white powdery beaches, Finolhu features 125 beachfront and overwater villas, more than half with private pools. The PADI Mermaid sessions start from £115, while stays begin at £420 per night for two adults in a Lagoon Villa on a bed and breakfast basis.
