The Hoxton Shoreditch celebrates 20 years with interiors refresh
The Hoxton Shoreditch is celebrating 20 years in operation with a 'retro-futurism' redesign, while giving fans the chance to snap up its old furnishings with all proceeds going to charity. Olivia Palamountain reports
East London's Hoxton Shoreditch, which pioneered the boutique hotel chain's distinctive design approach, is set to complete a design transformation by January 2026, in honour of its 20th anniversary.
The refresh introduces a "Cosy Up" room category featuring bar lounge areas, whilst existing accommodations will adopt "retro-futurism" elements including high-shine chrome metals, mint-green bedside tables and conical frosted light fixtures that evoke shades of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
An unusual element of the refurbishment involves a public sale of original furnishings. On September 14, the hotel will host "Hox Flea" as part of Shoreditch Design Triangle, selling pre-owned pieces including mid-century chairs, statement lighting and armchairs to brand enthusiasts. All proceeds benefit Shelter From The Storm, an independent homeless shelter.Il Bambini Club will replace Hoxton Grill, the brand's first restaurant concept, bringing Italian dining to the ground floor space. The new all-day venue promises fresh pasta, signature pizzas and spritzes in what the hotel describes as equal parts trattoria and Italian holiday atmosphere. Peruvian restaurant Llama Inn remains on the rooftop.
The redesign, led by Ennismore's in-house design team Aime Studios, incorporates materials and colours reflecting Shoreditch's creative heritage. Galvanised metals and exposed conduit reference the area's warehouse history, whilst bold colour usage nods to local street art and flyposting culture. Textiles and timber elements pay homage to historical trades including silk weaving and woodworking.
Room designs will feature muted blues, earthy greens and warm amber upholstery alongside terrazzo marble, tan leather and woven rugs. Bathrooms adopt two distinct styles: light grey and navy tiling with fluted glass, or mottled forest green marble with glossy brown tiles and mint detailing.
The refresh acknowledges the property's role as template for subsequent Hoxton hotels whilst updating its 210 rooms to current brand standards. New interconnecting room options cater to group bookings and family travel, addressing evolving customer needs since the original 2004 opening. The project represents a significant investment in the brand's flagship property as parent company Ennismore continues expanding The Hoxton concept globally.
