The hotel Splendido, Belmond's glamorous Italian riviera retreat, has unveiled a Martin Brudnizki renovation featuring hand-painted botanical murals, a Dior Spa and an all-new exclusive-use villa. Olivia Palamountain reports

Splendido, Portofino's most famous hotel, has reopened following an extensive renovation by Martin Brudnizki.

The Belmond property sits on a hillside overlooking the Bay of Portofino, and is set within a 16th-century former Benedictine monastery.

The centrepiece of the renovation is Baratta Sedici, a new bar featuring hand-painted botanical murals on whitewashed walls and bespoke furniture.

Signature cocktails include La Vela, combining Portofino Gin with Campari, Amaro Camatti and Pineo, plus U Chef featuring Portofino Gin with tomato centrifuge, horseradish sauce and Seven Pod Indian pepper.

The Dior Spa marks a significant addition as Italy's first permanent collaboration between the luxury brand and a hotel. Located on the second floor with indoor-outdoor treatment spaces, the spa offers four treatment cabins and a rooftop relaxation terrace.Belmond SplendioBelmond SplendioWellness facilities expand beyond the spa to include a reimagined saltwater swimming pool designed by Italian landscape architect Marco Bay, a fitness centre with personal training options and a hillside tennis court with sea views. Bespoke wellness excursions range from meditative nature walks to kayaking adventures along the coast.

The renovation incorporates traditional local materials including Carrara marble, Graniglia alla Genovese and Lavagna stone, whilst furnishings sourced from regional estate sales and auction houses add authentic heritage touches. The Baronessa Suite is the renovation's most showpiece accommodation, designed to replicate an Italian aristocrat's drawing room complete with curios, antiques and objects d'art. The suite features a private garden entrance with direct pool access and an expansive terrace overlooking the Gulf of Portofino, incorporating feminine touches including pink accents, floral motifs and shell-shaped wall lights.

Executive chef Corrado Corti continues overseeing culinary operations after more than two decades, maintaining the hotel's reputation through La Terrazza fine dining restaurant and Splendido Grill, both emphasising regional ingredients and traditional Ligurian cuisine.Belmond SplendioBelmond SplendioBelmond has also added Villa Beatrice to the estate, a private summer residence overlooking the sea.

Offering complete exclusivity from its private parkland position, the villa featuring four suites in the main building plus "La Casetta", a separate one-bedroom stone cottage, alongside a private pool, sea access and tower bar accommodating up to 30 guests.

The villa includes round-the-clock butler and private chef service, airport transfers from Genoa, chauffeur service to Portofino destinations and complimentary experiences including cooking classes, mixology workshops, painting, yoga, fitness sessions and guided tours.Belmond SplendioWellness amenities encompass a 60-minute signature spa treatment per person, access to Dior Spa Splendido facilities and in-villa treatments.
