Qatar Airways has transformed a commercial flight from Doha to London into a competitive e-sports arena, made possible by Starlink's high-speed satellite internet connection.

The "Gaming in the Sky" event, which took place on May 11, 2025, brought together renowned gaming personalities and content creators who competed in teams while cruising at 35,000 feet.

Players were organised into two squads - Team Burgundy Oryx and Team Grey Aviators - for the mid-air Cloud Cup competition, which was streamed to fans worldwide through the airline's social media channels.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, says: "At Qatar Airways, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the sky to deliver an in-flight experience that captures the imagination and makes you feel right at home. This competition represents a bold step into the future of passenger engagement and comfort when flying with Qatar Airways."

The event featured an impressive roster of gaming and entertainment talent, including Tfue, Castro1021, Lisa Zimouche, Alodia Gosiengfiao, Dantic, SV2, AJ3, Aameghessib, Danny Aarons, Ffearfful, MattHDGamer and Slater, with Oussifooty serving as host.

The tournament coincides with Qatar Airways' final stages of equipping its Boeing 777 fleet with Starlink connectivity. The carrier has also begun introducing the technology to its Airbus A350 aircraft - claiming to be the first airline worldwide to do so.

These upgrades will provide all passengers with complimentary ultra-fast wifi capable of supporting streaming, gaming and work tasks during flights.

Qatar Airways currently operates the largest Starlink-equipped fleet of widebody aircraft globally and is the only airline in the Middle East and North Africa region offering the service, further cementing its reputation for technological innovation in passenger experience.
