A new survey from bunq has revealed that an unprecedented number of British adults are considering starting a new life abroad.

Financial pressures and quality of life concerns are the primary motivators, with one in four (26%) citing the cost of living crisis as the key factor driving their desire to leave the UK.

Millennials appear to be feeling the squeeze most acutely, with nearly one-third (31%) considering relocation specifically due to mounting financial pressures at home.

Beyond economic factors, more than a quarter (27%) of respondents believe their overall quality of life would improve by moving overseas, while one in five (20%) feel their mental wellbeing would significantly benefit from an international lifestyle.

The bunq Global Living Report indicates there may be financial advantages to such a move, with nearly one in four (24%) digital nomads reporting increased financial security, and 28% saying they've been able to save more money while living abroad.

However, the research also highlights potential financial complications, with digital nomads often facing unexpected costs such as medical expenses (16%) and local taxes (15%).

Mental health benefits appear significant for those who have already made the move, with 36% of digital nomads reporting a positive impact on their mental health, and nearly one in five saying they've built stronger relationships since leaving the UK.

Bianca Zwart, chief strategy officer at bunq, says: "More people are realising that they have the freedom to build a life on their own terms, wherever that may be. Living abroad isn't about running away; it's about running toward something better: more freedom, better balance, and new possibilities."

Psychologist and digital nomad Agustín Hayes adds: "Nowadays more and more people are asking how can I maximise my well-being while minimising major stressors? Adopting a nomadic lifestyle could be an answer - offering you the chance to stretch your money further, experience new cultures, and find a rhythm of life that truly works for you, even if just for a season."

The findings come as the UK continues to face economic challenges, with rising living costs affecting households across the country, prompting many to reconsider their long-term plans and explore opportunities abroad.
