Former Kiwi sheep farm now home to quirky retreat
A former sheep farm in New Zealand is now home to Gardener's Folly, a cottage with unique design details that nod to the region's agricultural past. Olivia Palamountain reports
The Gardener's Folly, situated in North Island's Ruapehu District, is an isolated escape set amid rolling farmland. The newly renovated two-bedroom cottage is positioned within a maple copse and maintains connections to its agricultural heritage through details such as a custom-made recycled milk carton floor.
Both bedrooms are ensuite and feature queen-sized beds, antique furniture, and bespoke décor, while the designer kitchen is fitted with Carrara marble worktops.
The bathroom includes a walk-in double shower with twin rain-heads beneath a glass roof, finished with a pressed-tin ceiling. An alfresco covered deck furthers a connection to the hills and valleys beyond.
Paul Carberry, founder of New Zealand in Depth, which manages the property, tells Globetrender: “From its humble roots as a car sales office, to its reimagination as luxury boutique accommodation set amidst the tranquil oasis of New Zealand’s Forgotten World farmland, the new Gardener’s Folly is a real treat.”
“Hosts Chris and Scott have put their heart and soul into transforming this wonderful, detached cottage with décor that complements the horticultural theme throughout. The property is set apart from the main lodge providing guests with exclusive access to the Folly. There's also the option of adding dinner prepared by a private chef to enhance the experience.” The location serves as a base for activities including the Tongariro Crossing, known for its active crater, steam vents, and emerald lakes. Guests can also experience Forgotten World Adventures, travelling along an abandoned railway line by rail cart.
The cottage is available for exclusive use, with optional private chef dining experiences. A 14-night itinerary including three nights at Gardener's Folly costs approximately £2,700 per person, based on two sharing, including car hire, accommodation, and breakfasts, but excluding flights.
