Luxury river cruise debuts on the Mekong

Mekong Kingdoms has launched a new 50-metre luxury vessel in Laos, featuring spa treatments, cultural excursions and gourmet dining. Olivia Palamountain reports

Mekong Kingdoms will debut its newest vessel, the 50-metre Bohème, with a six-day maiden voyage between Luang Prabang and Vientiane on Dcember 9, 2024.

Mornings aboard Bohème offer bird watching from three expansive decks or pampering in two spa treatment rooms, while afternoons feature cultural adventures. Evenings come alive with riverside dining experiences.

Accommodating just 26 passengers, the ship offers three levels of luxury accommodation. The 30-square-metre Deluxe Suites, located on the lower deck, feature private balconies, living rooms, and en-suite bathrooms with Mekong River views.Bohème: A Luxury River Cruise Main deck Premier View Suites (26 square metres) offer panoramic vistas from Juliet balconies, while the flagship 60-square-metre Royal Suite includes a private sundeck, strategically placed freestanding bath, and dedicated butler service.

Each cabin showcases thoughtful design through Laotian craftsmanship, featuring Ikat fabric throws, blonde wood parquet flooring, and silky-soft linens. Modern amenities include air conditioning, premium sound systems, Nespresso machines, and well-stocked minibars.Bohème: A Luxury River CruiseThe cultural programme includes torch-lit exploration of Pak Ou caves, dining near Kuang Si waterfall, and visits to traditional craft villages. Guests can learn saa paper-making using mulberry bark in Ban Xang Khong village and meet artisans at Ban Chan pottery village. A highlight includes time at Xayaboury's Elephant Conservation Centre, where visitors gain insights into elephant welfare from local mahouts.

A crew of 20, including a cruise manager, chef, mixologists, guides and spa therapists, leads activities ranging from cooking classes to mixology sessions. The journey, priced from US$3,400 per person, can start or end at the historic Avani+ Luang Prabang Hotel in the UNESCO World Heritage town, with both downstream and upstream itineraries available.
