Viceroy at Ombria Algarve will champion the region's rural charm and cultural heritage with guest experiences spanning apiary to shepherding. Olivia Palamountain reports

Viceroy Hotel Group will open a new hotel in Portugal's rugged Algarve countryside on October 1, 2024.

Situated just north of Loulé and 30 minutes from Faro airport, Viceroy at Ombria Algarve will feature 141 accommodations including guest rooms, suites and residences made from locally-sourced materials.

Each of the 24 accommodation buildings varies in shape and size, centred around a focal tower, mirroring the layout of a traditional local village. Viceroy Ombria AlgarveExpect six dining outlets on launch, each paying homage to local cuisine and using produce grown on-site or sourced locally.

Amenities include four swimming pools, a Kid's Club, and a holistic-focused Spa by Viceroy set to open in early 2025.

Guests will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as honey harvesting with local beekeepers, riding through the countryside and participating in traditional crafts such as pottery and bread-making.Viceroy Ombria AlgarveViceroy Ombria AlgarveFor something deeply rural, they can even become a shepherd for a day.

"Guests can grab a walking stick and become part of a timeless country practice and learn about traditional sheep herding practices alongside a local shepherd," says the hotel. "They will learn sheep herding techniques and basic commands used with the sheepdogs, and even assist with a simple task under the shepherd's guidance".Viceroy Ombria Algarve

The resort also features an 18-hole golf course designed by Jorge Santana da Silva, complete with a clubhouse that aims to become a hub for local golfers.

The project has planted over 700 oak trees, restored 1,800 linear metres of river habitat, and incorporates solar and geothermal energy alongside bioclimatic architecture throughout the resort.
