Dreaming of getting away from it all? The Diagonal Dwelling is a low-footprint, cantilevered cabin designed for off-the-grid locations, making it the perfect place to hide out. Sam Ballard reports

Designed by NYDE, a boutique design firm founded by former Foster and Partners and Zaha Hadid Architects alumni Nicos Yiatros, challenges the traditional idea of a ready-made, pre-fabricated cabin.

The Diagonal Dwelling is set at a 55-degree angle (for “solar optimisation”) and cantilevered to appear almost gravity-defying. The unique design allows for more interior space, while minimising the building’s footprint.

Inside there is a kitchenette, a bedroom (with a “floating” bed) and a living space with a day bed and fireplace. There are also two outdoor areas – one with a hot tub and another with an elevated terrace – and three levels, allowing for differing views of the landscape.Images of the Diagonal Dwelling picture it on the edge of a Scottish Loch, allowing guests to take advantage of the stunning views, however, it has been designed to allow it to be customised and sit within other locations.

In a statement the company said: “This luxury cabin aims to be a sustainable, off-the-grid dwelling. It is customisable to fit the client’s personal needs and it is primarily designed to make the guest’s stay unforgettable.

“It is fully functional and it can be fabricated within 20 weeks and installed on site in less than ten days once it is shipped to location.”Globetrender’s Future of Luxury Travel Forecast 2020-2025, identified Wilderness Hideouts as a key trend the new decade, and the Diagonal Dwelling is one of many examples of how this trend is manifesting.

Report co-author John O’Ceallaigh wrote at the beginning of 2020: “Travellers are increasingly searching for true escapism, and it’s looking like glamping will be a key benefactor of that trend. From a value of US$2.07 billion globally in 2018, the glamping market is projected by Verified Market Research to achieve a CAGR of 10.71 per cent from 2019 to 2026, when it will be worth an impressive US$4.6 billion.”

Becasue of the surge in camping, glamping and spending time in the outdoors as a consequence of the global pandemic, we can now expect this figure to be much higher.
